Noteworthy: Broke a 16-game losing streak with a win over Staunton River last season. Schedule has been shuffled, but it’s not any easier. Heritage, Pulaski County, North Stafford and Spotswood have all been removed from the schedule, but replaced by Harrisonburg, Magna Vista, Brookville, and new district opponent Franklin County. Fleming remains in a tough spot with a student body population that makes it a Class 5 school, but generally do not have the talent to compete with the best Class 5 schools in the State
William Byrd
2018 Record: 7 – 4 overall; 2 – 2 Blue Ridge District

Noteworthy: Notable by what is absent. Jeff Highfill retired at the end of 2018 after 39 seasons at William Byrd and 40 seasons as a head coach. Highfill finished is 39 year career at Byrd with a 211-185-1 record and an overall career record of 219-197-1. Lutz has big shoes to fill but has promised that Byrd will not abandon it’s long-time preference for running the football. Byrd drops down from Class 4 to Class 3 like most of the other teams in the Blue Ridge. Byrd has 5 winning seasons in its last 6. Back-to-back playoff loses to E.C. Glass 2017 and 2018. Of the current Blue Ridge teams (excluding Franklin County which just joined this year), Byrd is the only one to never advance out of the Regional playoffs.

Noteworthy: Staunton River went into 2018 minus 21 of 22 starters from its 2017 State Semi-Final team, and figured to take a step back. Instead they went totally into the sewer going from the State semi-finals to 0-10. Jeremy Haymore was fired after 2 games. Brian Divers – who wasn’t even on the staff – took over for the final 8 games. Now, in steps Defensive Coordinator Shaun Leonard (a William Byrd graduate) which may or may not be good news considering that Staunton River game up almost 50 points per game last year. It doesn’t help that the schedule has been shuffled so that the Golden Eagles face one of the best Class 1 teams in William Campbell and one of the best Class 4 teams in Blacksburg this season. I’m not sure what the Staunton River parents expect, but 2016 and 2017 isn’t coming back anytime soon. Former coach Chuck Poston saw the disaster coming and got out just in time.
Franklin County
2018 Record: 7 – 5 overall; 4 – 1 Piedmont
Head Coach: J.R. Edwards – 10th season overall; 5th at Franklin County. Career Record: 47 – 60 overall; 16 – 37 at Franklin County

Noteworthy: Franklin County is the largest school in the Blue Ridge in Class 6, but frankly is more like a Class 4 or 3 school. They can compete in the District, but outside of that the sledding will remain difficult. As the largest school in the Roanoke-Lynchburg area, this remains the toughest job, but they did get it pointed in the right direction last year winning 7 games. Edwards went 31-23 at Hidden Valley with his best season 10-3 in 2006 with a loss in the State Semi-Finals to eventually champion Richlands. Franklin County won its first playoff game since 2011 last year. School has playoff wins in 2009, 2010 and 2011. Franklin County is 24 – 51 since 2011.
RIVER RIDGE DISTRICT
2018 Champion – Blacksburg
What’s New – Salem has just its 3rd head coach since 1983 as Don Holter takes over for Stephen Magenbauer. Every River Ridge team made the playoffs last season.

Schedule is identical to last year with the exception of Staunton River replacing Richlands in Week 4. Will play Salem on a Thursday night due to Virginia Tech home game with Duke being scheduled for Friday September 27th. Sloss won just 5 games in 3 years at Carroll County, last year he won 13.

Noteworthy: Not many places is an 8-4 record a failure, but it is at Salem. Spartans won three straight championships before losing in the first round of the playoffs in 2018. Holter becomes just the third Salem coach since 1983 (Willis White’s first season). He was a member of the 1984 Salem team that went 9-1, but did not qualify for the playoffs as they lost the Roanoke Valley District championship to Pulaski County and did not get the one (1) wild card spot in a 4-team regional playoff. Holter replaces Stephen Magenhauer who steps aside at Salem with an overall coaching record of 186 – 46, and 169 – 27 at Salem. Spartans have the game of the year on the schedule, an October 18th meeting with Martinsburg, WV. Martinsburg has won 42 straight games and 3 straight WV Class-AAA Championships. Finished last season by facing a Bob Christmas team in Jefferson Forest and will open this season against Christmas’ new team, Amherst County.

Noteworthy: Fulton is a studious math teacher at Cave Spring whose team couldn’t score points and couldn’t stop others from scoring in 2018. Scored 62 of their season total 190 points in one game, a 62-20 win over Staunton River. Staunton River is off the schedule replaced by Northside. Cave Spring’s only two wins came over teams (Staunton River and Alleghany) that did not win a game. Back-to-back 2-9 seasons. 5 losing seasons in their last 6 seasons. Fulton’s best team won 10 games in 2009.

Noteworthy: Weaver is just the third catch in Hidden Valley’s short history and by far the longest tenured, starting his second decade this fall. Just 5 – 16 in the last two seasons, but have beaten rival Cave Spring in back-to-back seasons. Abingdon is off the schedule replaced by Glenvar. Played Franklin County last year in a non-district game. This year it is a district game.

Noteworthy – Christmas returns Amherst County to its run-oriented ways with his old school Wishbone offense. This program was a complete mess last year. Cecil Phillips took an offensive coordinator job in Georgia. The school hired Trevor Porter from Georgia to be the head coach and he lasted about a week into fall practice and was let go before he even coached a game. Christmas will bring new energy and credibility to Amherst County but it’s a fair question to wonder just how long before his wandering eye has him looking for his next job.

Noteworthy: Woody, who has two state championships at Brookville, is working his magic at E.C. Glass. After winning 14 games in his first two seasons, Glass won 11 last year and lost to only Heritage in the Seminole District. Glass figures to be even better this year and circle November 1st as the game against Heritage will likely be for the Seminole Championship. Schedule has been altered. Halifax County is gone and replaced by George Washington. Heritage game has been moved from Week 4 to Week 10 close to its traditional old Western District place on the schedule in the final week.

Noteworthy: Christmas was an offensive minded coach and the results showed. JF could score points in bunches, but couldn’t stop anyone else from scoring. Held a poor Staunton River team to just 7 points, but held only Magna Vista and Staunton River under 20 points. Curious that JF never mentioned White’s career record in their announcement of his hiring. The reason, it’s pretty poor. White went 2 – 28 in 3 seasons at Gloucester, 20 – 32 in 5 years at Mathews but 10 of those came in one year and then went 11 – 29 at the Apprentice School in Newport News. White comes to JF from a position as an Offensive Line coach at famed Odessa Permian in Odessa, Texas. White was a 4 year letterman for coach Hank Norton at Ferrum College. He was part of the 1989 team that lost in the National Semi-Finals. That team featured D-I transfer and future NFL Runningback Chris Warren.

Noteworthy: Former Coach Ed Martin was fond of saying that “there’s never a year to get Brookville” and he continues to be correct. Bees have been in the playoffs 15 straight seasons. Have the best Week 1 match-up when they host Lord Botetourt. Botetourt and fellow Blue Ridge member William Fleming replace Waynesboro and Harrisonburg on the schedule. Patrick Henry returns. Went 0 for Lynchburg in 2018 losing to E.C. Glass and Heritage twice and being outscored in those 3 games 84 – 7

November 8 – vs. Liberty Christian
Noteworthy: The point is to win the game, and that’s what Heritage did last year winning 4 games by a combined 13 points including the state semi-finals and state championship by 7 points. 27-3 over the past two seasons and 13-1 in the Seminole District. William Fleming and Northside are off the schedule replaced by Vance, North Carolina and a week 2 Saturday afternoon game at Richmond’s John Marshall. November 1st game vs. E.C. Glass may well be for the Seminole championship. The Heritage-Glass game moves closer to its traditional date. It used to end the season when both were in the AAA Western District. Brad Bradley won his 3rd state championship. Bradley is just 13 wins shy of 200 wins and could conceivable get win 200 this season. If not, he will certainly get it in 2020.

Noteworthy: Martin is the 5th Martinsville coach since Taylor Edwards retired in 2006. Edwards had just one losing season in 25 years as Martinsville’s Head Coach. Martin’s last team at William Fleming went 0 – 10 in 2017, so he enters 2019 without having coached a team to a win in a single game since 2016. He did not coach last year. Martin graduated from Laurel Park and played at Virginia Tech graduating in 1985. Martin coached basketball at George Washington, leading his team to the Class AAA state championship game.
