And Finally…the Hogoheegee

We finish up the preseason roundup with the tiny little Hogoheegee District in far Southwest Virginia.  Next year, the league will expand but for now it remains a four team league with two very good teams, and two very average teams

Chilhowie Warriors (Class 1; Region 1D)

2017 Record:  11 – 4 overall; 3 – 0 Hogoheegee District

Head Coach Jeff Robinson – 6th season overall; 6th season at school (Career Record: 30 – 28)  (Record at School:  30 – 28)

2017 Points Scored:    549 (36.6 average per game)

2017 Points Allowed: 262 (17.5 average per game)

Started the year 3-3 and then just started mowing people down winning 8 in a row until they were beaten by Riverheads in the Class 1 State Championship Game.  The entire team is back from last year including all the important parts.  The question is how do they handle success.

Patrick Henry Glade Spring Rebels (Class 1; Region 1D)

2017 Record:  9 – 3 overall; 2 – 1 Hogoheegee District

Head Coach:  Mark Palmer – 8th season at School (Record at school:  38 – 40)

2017 Points Scored:    415 (34.6 average per game)

2017 Points Allowed: 298 (24.8 average per game)

Palmer was an assistant on Lexington’s 1988 Class A; Division 2 State Championship team.  He came from two schools that are now closed having served as the Head Coach at Ervinton High School from 1990 – 1997 and St. Paul from 2003 – 2009.  He replaced Mike Compton as the Head Coach at PH-Glade Spring.  Compton – from Richlands – was an All-American at West Virginia, a first round draft pick of the Detroit Lions and won two Super Bowl rings as a member of the New England Patriots.  Compton is now an assistant at UVA-Wise.  After going 6 – 25 his first three seasons, Palmer’s team has gone 32 – 15 with four straight playoff appearances.

Holston Cavaliers (Class 1; Region 1D)

2017 Record:  2- 8 overall;  0 -3 Hogoheegee District

Head Coach:  Derrick Patterson – 5th season overall; 5th season at school (Career Record:  5 – 25) (Record at School:  5 – 25)

2017 Points Scored:    186 (18.6 average per game)

2017 Points Allowed: 371 (37.1 average per game)

Patterson is a graduate of Covington High School and is the first African American Head Coach in the history of the Hogoheegee District which was formed in 1970.  He served as an assistant for former Coach Jason Matlock who coached the Cavaliers through a 7 year run of success which included a 45 – 35 record, 6 playoff appearances and two appearances in the State semi-finals.

Northwood Panthers  (Class 1; Region 1D)

2017 Record:  3 – 7 overall; 1 – 2 Hogohegee District

Head Coach:  Chris Duble – 2nd season overall; 2nd season at school (Career Record:  3 – 7) (Record at School 3- 7)

2017 Points Scored:    273 (27.3 average per game)

2017 Points Allowed: 419 (41.9 average per game)

The bottom has fallen out after 3 straight winning seasons from 2013 – 2015.  Panthers have won just 4 of their last 20 games.  In 2003, the school won 10 games going 10-2 and losing to Bath County in the Region C; Division 1 championship game.
